It took me a while to digest what you are saying.  Yes that would work and the bearing shell could be the mold for the Carbon fiber stub or mast.  There are corrosion and expansion issues, but it should work.  A thin sheet of any of the bearing sleeve materials should then work too, and be thinner than the lignum vitae and more easily replaced.
