To answer the question you pose - the beams are glass wrapped.  The loads are not much as the dagger board brace takes the high load from the board if Matt is prepared to push it.  He wanted low volume stabilisers to keep weight and windage down.  One benefit of  that is his weight can submerge one stabiliser to right it if it capsizes.

If he finishes the R2AK in good shape he will be a happy man.   He will not have much time to tune and rework things.  

Looking forward to a sail on bucket list although I will be away in August and September.  

The 40F has many nice features.   My single thought for now is that faired coaming around the cockpit area with a gutter that the elevating roof sits on might reduce water dribbling into the area.
