I mean 10 to 12 knots would make me exceedingly happy. The current commercial hybrid boats can't go more than about five knots in full sun without dipping into their batteries.  

How much space for solar panels is a circular question. The energy required to drive the boat at the desired speed will determine the size of the motor which will determine the solar requirements. So it's all a bit chicken and egg. Looking for a light seaworthy inexpensive platform. The cost will determine the size I can afford and then the real calculations begin.

Just looking for a starting point.

10 to 12 knots is a good turn of speed, thats a Lagoon 44 in a hurricane

not sure about 40F masts because the arent on a tabernacle, theyre mounted deep into the hull. Although I think reduced sail is possible as it has a lot of sail area to weight. Something in the order of 15 lbs sq ft?

when you say large, how large is this solar panel? Easy to envisage 8 sq m without much effort
