Some do. Been there done that, helped unwrap the bag from the forestay during my off-watch at night many times. Better on a multihull as you don’t need a pole and the bag is less likely to wrap. They are good for downwind work which is what cruising should be about. I prefer an assymetric. Less useful on a schooner and with unstayed masts.

Do cruisers usually carry and use spinnakers?
If I wasn't planning to race (officially and seriously) should I be worried about light air performance?
