That's just what they want to do if they're on lashings or parrels (hoops).  See the attached photo of a gaff-rigged unstayed sail doing the same thing, though less pronounced because of the smaller sail and smaller mast diameter.

With the full-sized boat, the effect should be somewhere between:  a) the smooth leeward edge of perfectly-adjusted rotating wing mast, and  b) the turbulence created with track on a fixed mast when the sail's luff is several inches to windward of where a smooth edge would be.

It might even surpass a rotating wing mast over the course of a day if you don't have someone to keep an eye on tuning the rotation -- a good average is better than periods of optimization followed by long spans of non-optimization.

"Steinar is working on some graphics to make it look lower."
and please add fore - aft asymmetry in the graphics as in the original BL drawing - the lack of it as in all other designs freaks out non-proa sailors (and their significant others who before they buy a boat need to know which direction to sit in the boat when having tea - once bought and on board and the kettle is on the skipper can explain that the boat sometimes goes in reverse to protect the tea party from the wind)
