Socks work well on straight masts, not on tapered when they are reefed.  Also, full length battens need end fittings which work on different diameters.  Plus, the sock is messy when the sail is lowered.  And as you say, they are hard to hoist, lower and change sides when they are wet.

Gary Hoyts Freedom boats used a socket in the sail for the unstayed mast to sit in, but some people found it could get too tight when tacking if the sail was wet with rain.
