back when smaller more affordable IOR boats began to appear they faced a similar issue. The boats with headroom looked tall and boxy compared to the sleek 12m boats, so people put stripes on their white hulls to disguise them.

These were organised so that the base white would extend up over the LWL by 6" or so to try hide the size of the bow wave and therefore speed from competitors, and up to something short of the joint of the gunwale.The effect relies on a design attribute using horizontal stripes making something look longer or vertical making something look taller.

The space then became popular for the boats name, and then more overt sponsor advertising, which can command quite a dividend if a boat/team/crew have some measure of success.
