The question on cost is the key reason to use a proven marine foam or spend a good deal of effort thoroughly testing an alternative.  


Even if an unproven core is twice the cost of a proven one it will work out to be about a 10% saving overall on the boat.  So you save 10% and put a question mark over the rest of the expenditure and effort to build the boat.  

I do experiment with materials but if I am making something that needs to be durable and reliable I don’t devalue my effort by using low cost materials unless I have tested them thoroughly in a familiar process.
