The damage to a harry polystyrene bow would be much worse.

Agreed.  That is a solid little boat.  Impressive.
And at highet speed too.
Yes.  At 10 knots it may not fare so well.
One or two layers of kevlar would not be much help.  The keel boat survived because of a massive build up of fibreglass.  Could equally have been carbon or kevlar. kevlar is good for resisting abrasion on the outer skin and damage on the inner.  A mate of mine's 12m cat with kevlar/foam/kevlar hulls rubbed against a large steel mooring buoy.  It went through the outer kevlar like a knife through butter,  the foam  even quicker, but a few hours later had not gone through the unsupported inner skin.

Before using kevlar, lay up a sample and when cured, whack it with a hammer,  then remove the delaminated bit and try to repair it.  Glass suddenly looks much better.

The lightweight solution is kick up boards and glass/polystyrene bows with a substantial bulkhead behind them.  This can be angled aft if you want to ride over logs etc when the polystyrene is knocked off.

Who taught them to sail?

Looking at Kevlar, damage, and repair.

Saw this, and wanted to revisit this discussion.

Looking at the actual damage after willful collision, it does not seam bad. A fix would be rather easy, imho.

I am not sure kevlar would have helped mitigate damage, and would complicate the repair greatly.

Any thoughts?
