The 18m harryproa in Melbourne now has an auto pilot.  Two years ago continuously rotating hydraulic steering was installed using orbital hydraulic pump/motors.  That enable reasonably simple installation of hydraulic pump autopilot. So far we have not figured out an easy way to reverse the control action after a shunt.  In fact have not even sailed with it in operation just motoring to test it.

The hydraulic pump and valve block enables the unit to remain in circuit when the wheel steering is used but the wheel has to be isolated for the autopilot to work otherwise the wheel spins.  At this stage the isolation is a manual valve and will likely remain that way.
