The shortness is generally related to the unstayed mast.  An unstayed mast rapidly gets heavier and more expensive as it gets taller.    People compensate for this by greater sail area.   Roger Taylor for example runs a sail that has almost 50% more material than the normal sail for  his boat.    He can get away with this because reefing is instant and easy, and each batten is a reef point.   Ming Ming II will ghost along in almost no wind as a result.

With a multihull, capsize is a serious concern, and that is a case for keeping the aspect ratio lower.  On a monohull, heeling is a "safety valve".  On a multi if it heels significantly, you are already in trouble.... it's in the process of going over.    They have training programs specifically for sailing cats for just this reason.......

Interesting.  Do you think the profile contributes more than sail size?
Given that one can double sail size to make a higher performance sail, could they instead double profile performance and keep the same size sail?

Didn’t mean size - should have been clearer, I was referring to aspect ratio. I think junk rigs tend to be short because they hoist too much hardware and lines (and weight) aloft.
