| Soft wing wing sails are the future, and together with hard wings have been discussed here extensively.
|
| Especially given the speeds boats of this ilk can achieve, where single panel sails begin to suffer in performance against the conformity of a wing. With the added benefit that the efficiency of the wing sail is such that area can be much reduced.
I beg patience to ask stupid questions.
Why reduce sail area?
Given a well proven ability to quickly reef and/or depower, why not have more sail to make the most of low winds.
Does the extra weight of a soft sail matter? Given a HP platform has the cheapest RM available, the cheapest unstayed mast available, and very simple reef and depowering, does it really matter if the rig is heavier? We even have a 'heeled to far' rig depowering fuse!
Given a build it yourself, way cheaper than you think, sail for a HP, why not view the sails like the hulls? Put the biggest one that works for you and go?
