Hi!

I want to share some pictures and video of a boat built by a 79 year old man from Sweden. His name is Sven Yrvind and he designs and builds small and peculiar boats for himself, which he sails around the world at an average speed of 1-2 knots.

Exlex
Length: 5.76 meter / 18’ 11’
Beam 1.04 meter.
Self righting monohull without a keel.

I'm posting this here because I think Exlex shares many design features with the latest Harryproas:

Schooner rig
Unstayed carbon masts
Kickup boards/rudders mounted to the side of the hull
Square cross section hull
Foam sandwich construction

Are there more similarities?

Sven will sail this boat to New Zeeland (which is close to the anti-pole of Sweden). The trip will take about a year, and he doesn't plan to visit any ports - it is planned to be non-stop. This means he will likely celebrate his 80th birthday somewhere out there. He left Ireland 20 days ago, and you can follow his progress here:

Right now he is west of France with a speed of 2.05knots in 20-25 knots of wind straight astern. The low speed makes me suspect he is either capsized with the masts/sails dragging/slowing the boat down, sailing "on bare poles", and/or is using something like a sea anchor to keep the boat stable and steady in what must be a pretty rough ride with this boat. Or what do you think? I hope he is alright!

/Björn
