Google has deleted plenty of projects. Google Reader for one. Community of millions just deleted.

I doubt that google groups would be treated like that, and even if it did, one would probably have plenty of warning, as Google Reader users did. And probably options to save relevant data.

So Google Groups might be an option if we don't self host. But it has all the problems of putting someone else in charge of your group.
