Erutan,

You may be wrong, but if I'm not willing to pony up and do the work, my opinion doesn't matter all that much, does it?   ;-)

[Disclaimer:  I do a lot of volunteer work for an association that shares a dock and harbor, and my general feeling is that people are welcome to have opinions if they show up to help.  Otherwise...]

Instead of focusing on a product for the time being, I'd first focus on criteria.

  I'll posit the following...

  Priority A

    - Forum with threads and email copies
    - Ability to reply to an ongoing thread via email
    - Ability to host files, photos, and other media in folders
    - Ability to import the Yahoo archive

  Priority B

    - In WordPress, using plugins, so it can be deployed anywhere
    - With a common skill set in the industry
    - On the Harryproa site (so everything gets backed up at once)
    - Preferably tested in the latest WordPress

MailMan is better than the solution I've implemented (which is nothing), but I'm not sure about whether or not it hosts files, and the plugin page shows it hasn't been tested in the last three major WordPress updates.

That said, I'm not sure if there's a path to go from Yahoo to BuddyPress, so it might not be perfect.

Perhaps bbpress or another gets to all the criteria.  Or something like "Forums by Website Toolbox" could be used to import data and then move it over to bbpress or buddypress.

Fwiw, I've got most of the forum posts in an email folder going back to January 2010.  I believe those could be exported and then imported into most packages.
