Erutan,

The MailMan archives list page looks great.  As long as it handles email replies, that's everything I'd want in for discussions.  It even has regEx searching, which is something I'd actually enjoy using.

I know that some folks never bother with the web interface, but if you ever want to look up something from the past, search through the archives, or look at a collection of files (say, construction photos), it's important to have a web portal into the list.

Unfortunately, I don't see any reference to the ability to host group files/media in folders to which users can upload. It's not there in the feature list or the detailed news file.

If the ability to host a files section is included, or can be added-on (plugin?), then I'd say mailman is the way to go.

If mailman can't be modified to handle a shared files section, I'd say that a solution that has that feature is the preferable one.

It might be possible to find a Wordpress plugin to do that, and then write scripts to automatically update the plugin's username/password list when the mailman usernames/passwords change, but that sounds like a lot more work than going with bbpress or buddypress.
