| Yesterday I spent a couple of hours laying up a fairing for the mast on Elementarry. 2m/80" long, 750mm/30" wide, 400 double bias with standard grade blown polystyrene core.
| Hand laid as the foam would not take vacuum.
Can not take vacuum because PS bead foam? Not XPS?
| Time consuming, sticky, smelly, tedious and no fun at all.
| Why anyone hand laminates when they can infuse is a mystery to me.
Another strike against older construction methods. I know people who became sensitized to epoxy (imagine you do too) and had to wear full ventilated suits to do a little job like you just did. This after years of building and getting very skilled. Every so often they would cheat on protection and be ill for days.
The health effects are real, non linear, and vary by person, randomly. I think the most important innovation of Intelligent infusion build methods is health protection. For older builders this is doubly important.
Assuming you cannot vac bead foam, I would suggest its low cost is offset by extra epoxy exposure health risk. And can't II
|The samples of the Foamular 700 arrived (Thanks Eric)
Wahoo! Hows it look? Crush test vs H80 soon? Did you get AU pricing and source?
| and I have some 400 Dow foam.
Doug was talking about building a disposable ply boat. How about 400 instead? How does that cost compare?
| Also got the abrasive string, but it clogs when cutting the foam, so not an alternative to hot wiring unless compressed air can be used to clear it.. I will do the foam tests when Elementarry is sailing.
Now we can start talking cheap hotwire table designs!
