  For what it's worth, it's generally a good idea to glass any wood that will be exposed to standing water, even if it's with lightweight kayak glass that turns invisible when varnished.

  All wood will expand and contract due to changing moisture content, even if saturated with a good aliphatic epoxy resin, and this movement will eventually create micro fractures in the surface, allowing water direct access to the wood.  The glass helps keep the surface together, and if it's lightweight, it isn't much more work than just painting with epoxy.

  I'm currently halfway through construction of a 26' plywood dory, and will be glassing both the interior and exterior plywood with 14-ounce glass/kevlar hybrid knit cloth for this reason.  Well, both for protection and to make it extra-beefy -- the boat is completely in displacement mode, so a bit of extra weight won't matter.
