The key points I am making is that XPS and PVC have different flammability and chemical resistance.  PVC is measurably superior in both regards.  These factors are as important to the primary safety of a boat as is the mechanical property of the material.

The key point with the slide presentation is the detail that needs to go into the design of XPS panels and their installation to achieve some level of fire protection.  There have been numerous large fire losses where XPS and EPS foams have been the key factor to the intensity of the fire and the extent of the loss.

Epoxy is more flammable than PVC and will support combustion so a PVC core boat will burn but not with the ferocity and speed of XPS core.

When building with XPS if you happened to spill acetone on the core it will just dissolve away.  If diesel or gasoline gets into the bilge or on the deck and finds its way into the core the core will dissolve away.   These are not unlikely events.

The other factor that needs consideration is UV resistance.  I do not know how XPS rates against PVC in this regard.  I know that unprotected polycore will disappear in about 4 years when exposed to sunlight.

As I said, PVC is safer if you are parking your boat near flaming trashcans, i guess. But lets be clear, in any sort of fire event that is a threat to a boat, if the boat is cored in pvc, it will not survive because of the pvc core, right? PVC core does not help in a fire. While it might not drip or flow, certainly the whole rest of the boat will be a flame, which will be the noticeable problem. Or do you see a pvc cored ship standing proud and safe around its flaming peers? Epoxy burns, right?
