Cost and volume increase as the cube of the length of a boat.    Safety increases at the same rate and the perception of safety increases even faster.  Short multis in big seas are scary.

Couple of other points:
Variable winds for a few days should not 'tire the crew" if the boat is set up for easy rig depowering.
Clambering around on the foredeck to set, watch and adjust a parachute anchor is a recipe for disaster, as well as being cold and wet.  So much easier, safer and more comfortable to do it over the aft beam of a harry.
Cockpits near the stern are far more prone to filling with water than central ones.
Astonishing that he can write that article and still advocate short, over weight, high windage cats to cruise offshore.

Doug,
I don't doubt that Owly will eventually see (if he hasn't already) that a harry is the boat that solves his problems and gets him sailing.  But being driven into a corner to justify a position that is not really justifiable makes it harder to change your mind, so giving him some space to do so seems like a good idea.

Owly,
What Mike said.   Everyone is welcome, just try and stay roughly on topic.
