I will add my two cents for eeking out every last foot of available space on transports, as I spent a few years loading steel construction beams for transport (a lot of them were heading to the States through Maine, as I was living in New Brunswick at the time):

- You can squeeze an extra couple of feet over the front of the trailer without going over the cab; most drivers would happily run at least three feet as long as it was loaded in the centreline of the trailer so it didn't hit the cab when articulating, which gets you to 56' on a 53' bed.

- Depending on where it was going, you can also overhang the rear of the trailer by four feet or so, as long as its flagged.  We would often go longer, but that usually required a flashing orange beacon.

This'll get you over 60' without running into additional permitting, or going over the cab. You could push more (and we often did), but it'll depend on how much of a risk of getting stopped the driver is prepared to take!  They tend to be a lot more risk tolerant the lighter the load is - sailboats and masts are not going to be anywhere near the load limit, large steel construction columns where another matter entirely....!  (again it depended on what the driver was prepared to tolerate!  Even if the cops/MTO were being strict, it was only a couple of hundred bucks on the once in a blue moon they'd get fined).

It you still need more length and don't want the inconvenience of additional permits, a car transporter trailer is another option; one of the ones where the trailer extends over the cab gets you the additional length.  Of course I couldn't find a picture of one from the US/Canada, but this'll give you an idea of the sort of trailer I'm talking about:

As the qualifying rules for 'Auto-Transporter' can be somewhat complex, many of them will run lengths up to 75', so may be worth checking out.

As ever, your experience in different States/Provinces/Territories/Countries may vary!

Regards,

Scott
