One of my bug bears with the owner of the 18m proa is lack of patience.  All his prior boats were powerful motor launches.  We often have debates about motoring with me wanting to sail unless going backwards and he wanting to motor when speed is below 4kts.  I do not like sailing to schedule where someone needs to be home by a certain time and, since retiring, that is one of joys of sailing.  However most crew and the owner expect to be home within an hour or two of nominated time.

I agree with your several hours. With limited battery storage (2 hours at 5kts, 1 hour at 5kts into 20kts winds) I always had the desire to conserve charge to give ample allowance for getting in and out of marinas or long torturous channels.  Having the diesel has eased that concern.

I do not believe 2 hours of motoring is enough to avoid range anxiety.  It is also handy to be able to make way for an hour or so in 40kts winds.  The 18m proa has huge windage due to the large cabin.

There's a lot to be said for having some serious thrust available for several hours straight.
