Thanks Rick.  I took your advice and contacted All4Solar about the Krautler for the prototype cargo ferry.  $AUS17,000 for the set up on p2 of http://www.all4solar.com.au/ALL4SOLAR_KR4_8_PODS.pdf, plus solar panels.  For 2 smaller motors (one on the tender, one on a rotating tube under the bridgedeck, the quote was:
 Two motorsysteems   AUD$  17000.00

(Induction motor PODs 5 KW, high end curtis controllers, lever, switches)

Battery bank 48 V DC 300 Ah  including terminals & main cables,

fuse and switches  AUD$ 3500.00

3.2 KW solar system with MPPT (2 units)  cables, breakers, fuses AUD  4600.00

Versus ~$10,000 for a 25 hp Yamaha.

The prototype ferry usage is unusual.  It will be sailed when possible, motored rarely and only for short distances at low speeds. Marinas will be avoided. If it can't motor or sail (no wind, no sun, flat batteries), it waits.  It also has to be zero emissions, so the outboard is not an option.  After zero emissions, it has to be low cost, although this may be reversed depending on the funds situation.  More on this in a month or so.

I spent last weekend in Papua New Guinea discussing a 1 or 2 person outrigger canoe which is cheap, easy to build and much lighter than the dugouts currently used (4 people needed to launch).  The workforce will primarily be women, as will the buyers.  If/when the prototype cargo ferry is built, it is likely to be here.
