    I doubt that you will have success working with very large pieces.  XPS is brittle, and the larger and thinner the pieces the more of a problem it will be.   Hot wire cutting creates a thin tough skin of solid melted polystrene, which helps, but when cutting 1/8" thick slabs  out of a large piece, I suspect that there will be virtually no foam between the melted surface............
 
    Do keep us informed in either case.......I'm very curious about your success or failure at this.   To me, knowing what didn't work is at least as valuable as knowing what did.........
